Adding Hosts

Add new hosts (IP addresses) to the subscription. Once added to the subscription, hosts are available for assignment to users for vulnerability management tasks. If the policy compliance module is enabled for the subscription, then hosts may also be made available for compliance management tasks.

The privilege to add assets (IPs and domains) is granted to all Managers automatically. Managers may grant Unit Managers the privilege to add assets to their business units and thus to the subscription. This option is set when creating or editing a Unit Manager's account.

Please note: It is your responsibility to verify that you have permission to scan all IPs submitted.

To add hosts:

1.    Select Host Assets from the left menu, under Tools.

2.    Go to the New menu and select IP Tracked Hosts, DNS Tracked Hosts or NetBIOS Tracked Hosts. Your selection sets the tracking method for the hosts being added.

The New Hosts page appears.

3.    In the IPs field, enter the IP addresses and/or IP address ranges to add to the account. Separate each IP or range with one of the following: comma, semi-colon, space, carriage return or tab. See the table below for acceptable IP formats.

4.    (Optional) Add new hosts to the Policy Compliance (PC) module. By selecting the check box Add to Policy Compliance Module, the new IPs being added will be available for policy compliance tasks in addition to the vulnerability management tasks. Note that this option only appears when the compliance module is enabled for the subscription and you have permission to add hosts to the PC module. All Managers have this permission. Unit Managers may be granted this permission.

5.    (Optional) Define host attributes. Select the check box next to each host attribute you want to define. Then enter a value in the field provided or select from the available drop-down menu. These settings will apply to all hosts being added.

IMPORTANT: If you are a Unit Manager, note that the hosts you're adding may already be in the subscription. If you define host attributes at this time, then your values will override any previously set values.

Tracking Method. The assigned tracking method determines how the host will be reported in scan reports. Hosts assigned a tracking method of DNS hostname or NetBIOS hostname will be listed in alphabetical order by hostname. Hosts assigned a tracking method of IP address will be listed in numerical order by IP address. See Tracking Method for more information.

Owner. The selected user will be assigned ownership responsibilities for the hosts being added. When creating remediation policies and manual tickets, users have the option to automatically assign tickets to asset owners.

Host Attributes. Provide additional host information. Attribute names are initially Location, Function and Asset Tag. Attribute names may have been customized by Managers. See Customizing Host Attribute Names to learn more.

6.    (Optional) Add host comments. Select the Comments check box and then enter important notes in the field provided. You can enter a maximum of 64 characters.

IMPORTANT: If you are a Unit Manager, note that the hosts you're adding may already be in the subscription. If you select the Comments check box, then your comments will override any comments previously entered for the hosts.

7.    (Unit Managers only) You must add new IPs to an asset group that you've been assigned. Select an asset group from the Assigned Groups menu. Once added, new IPs are available in your business unit. New IPs are also available to Managers for inclusion in other business units and asset groups.

8.    Click Add.
