Map options affect the way the service performs maps. Specifically, map options affect how the service gathers information about the target domain. These options appear on the Map tab when you create or edit an option profile.
Map Options: Perform Basic Information Gathering on | TCP Ports | UDP Ports | Options | Performance
Specify which hosts and ports to include in basic information gathering. Basic information gathering launches additional scan tests, which may result in the detection of additional devices, such as routers. The mapping service attempts to identify the operating system installed on each host and scans ports to determine which ports are open. The service also sends UDP packets to UDP port 1 and a random port for path discovery.
Your options are: All Hosts, Registered Hosts only, Netblock Hosts only, and None. All Hosts includes every host detected during the mapping process. Registered Hosts only includes hosts within your specified account. Netblock Hosts only includes hosts defined in the netblock for the target domain. To can specify a netblock for a domain by editing the domain configuration from the domain assets list (Tools > Domain Assets). (Initial Setting: All Hosts)
Select which TCP ports to include in basic information gathering. Specify up to 20 TCP ports to be scanned. Your options are: Standard Scan and Additional. To see a list of the ports included in a standard scan, click View list next to Standard Scan. To specify additional ports, select the Additional check box and enter the port numbers in the field provided. (Initial Setting: Standard Scan)
Select which UDP ports to include in basic information gathering. Specify up to 10 UDP ports to be scanned. Your options are: Standard Scan and Additional. To see a list of the ports included in a standard scan, click View list next to Standard Scan. To specify additional ports, select the Additional check box and enter the port numbers in the field provided. (Initial Setting: Disabled)
Perform Live Host Sweep. The mapping service pings every host within the target domain's netblock using ICMP, TCP and UDP probes to determine which hosts are alive. The netblock scanned may be a netblock specified in the domain configuration by the user or a netblock discovered by the service.
TCP and UDP probes are sent to default ports for common services on each host, such as DNS, TELNET, SMTP, HTTP and SNMP. If these probes trigger at least one response from the host, the host is considered "alive" and is reported on. Note that you can configure which probes are sent and which TCP and UDP ports are scanned on the Additional tab in your option profile.
When disabled, devices will only be discovered using DNS discovery methods (DNS, Reverse DNS and DNS Zone Transfer.) Active probes will not be sent. As a result, the mapping service may not be able to detect all hosts in the netblock on its own, and undetected hosts will not be analyzed. (Initial Setting: Enabled)
The overall performance level is High, Normal, Low or Custom. The performance level determines the number of netblocks to map in parallel, the number of IPs included in each netblock, and the delay between groups of packets sent to each netblock. Click Configure to select a different overall performance level or customize performance settings. See Configure Map Performance Settings for more information. (Initial Setting: Normal)
