Note: The DNS and NetBIOS tabs are only visible when the Scan by Hostname feature is enabled for the subscription. See Scan by Hostname for more information.
Use the DNS and NetBIOS tabs to add hosts to the asset group by hostname. When the asset group is scanned, all hosts specified in the group are scanned. This includes hosts specified by hostname on the DNS and NetBIOS tabs and hosts specified by IP address on the IPs tab.
To successfully scan hosts by hostname, the asset group must include a scanner appliance that is able to resolve the hostnames in the group to IP addresses in the account. Review the scanner appliances assigned to the group on the Scanner Appliances tab and add scanner appliances if needed.
Managers have permission to add/remove hostnames for the asset group. Other users with access to the asset group can view the list of DNS and NetBIOS hostnames assigned to the group.
Assigned Hostnames. This is a list of the hostnames added to the asset group. DNS hostnames are listed on the DNS tab and NetBIOS hostnames are listed on the NetBIOS tab.
Add/Remove. Select to manually add or remove hostnames. A pop-up will appear where you can type or paste a list of hostnames. Then click Add to add the hostnames to the asset group or click Remove to remove the hostnames from the asset group. See DNS and NetBIOS Formatting below.
Find Hostnames in Assigned List. Use the field provided to quickly find specific hostnames. Enter all or part of the hostname you're looking for. As you type, the list of assigned hostnames changes dynamically to show only hostnames that match what you enter.
Clear. Click to clear the Find Hostnames in Assigned List field. The original Assigned Hostnames list reappears.
Remove Selected. After selecting hostnames to remove, click this button to remove them from the Assigned Hostnames list.
Remove All. Click to remove all hostnames from the Assigned Hostnames list. If you select this option on the DNS tab, all DNS hostnames are removed. If you select this option on the NetBIOS tab, all NetBIOS hostnames are removed.
When you add DNS and NetBIOS hostnames to the asset group, validation will occur to make sure the hostnames are formatted correctly. If the hostnames do not meet the requirements below, then an error will appear. Correct the formatting and try again.
A DNS hostname must follow the formatting requirements of an FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Name). The hostname may include 2 or more labels separated by a dot. Each label may include up to 63 characters, including alphanumeric characters and hyphens as long as the label doesn't start or end with a hyphen. The last label (the one furthest to the right) must include 2 or more characters and can only be alphabetic characters. Here are some examples of acceptable DNS hostnames:
qualys.com
corp.qualys.com
host30-2-100.corp.qualys.com
A NetBIOS hostname may include up to 15 alphanumeric characters and these special characters:
! @ # $ % ^ & ( ) - _ ' { } . ~
